Chinese nuclear plants safe after earthquake

China's nuclear safety agency has reported no leaks of radioactivity, after it raised concern about possible damage to nuclear sites in Sichuan province, which was struck by a powerful earthquake last week.

The agency alerted its emergency personnel the day after the quake to prevent a secondary environmental disaster in the area. China's Ambassador to the United Nations, Wang Guangya, confirms that there have been no nuclear accidents in Sichuan province.

"The military also held a press conference. According to the information they received, the facilities are safe for the time being. So there won't be any damage to the safety and ecosystem."

China has a research reactor, two nuclear fuel production sites and two atomic weapons sites in Sichuan province.
