Security Council welcomes Doha agreement on Lebanon

The UN Security Council has welcomed the agreement reached in Doha on Wednesday between the political leaders of Lebanon under the auspices of the Arab League.

In a statement, the Council says the agreement is an essential step in resolving the current political crisis in Lebanon, which has been without a President since November. The Council also commends the agreement for banning weapons and violence as a means to settle disputes. The President of the Security Council for this month, UK Ambassador John Sawers says he hopes to see in the coming days the implementation of the agreement.

“Which we hope will bring to an end a dispute that’s been going on in the streets of Beirut for far too long, and has led to use of violence, disruption of normal life in Beirut, closure of the airport and much misery and suffering for the Lebanese people and indeed, has set back the development of the country as a whole.”

Starting with the election of a President this weekend, Mr. Sawers added, the painstaking process of rebuilding Lebanon’s unity can begin.
