IOM increases appeal to help foreign migrants in South Africa
The International Organization for Migration is stepping up its appeal to help foreign migrants in South Africa.~
Spokeswoman Jemini Pandya says IOM will need one million dollars to assist 2,000 people, up from an initial call for $355,000 made last week."We have received official requests from Ethiopia and Ghana to help return some of their nationals who want to go back home but who have no money, papers or belongings. In addition Burundi, Bangladesh, Pakistan the DRC, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique have also approached IOM on the same issue."
IOM say the vast majority of displaced migrants have fled the violence against foreigners in South Africa, which left 59 people dead and tens of thousands homeless, without any belongings, money or documents. However, many say they need evacuation assistance their governments are unable to provide.
