The AIDS epidemic is so severe in several areas around the world that it should be treated as a priority during disasters.

That according to a new report by the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies.

The editor of the "World Disasters Report", Lindsey Knight says the report looks at the links between HIV/AIDS and disasters.

She warns that if the humanitarian world does not make HIV prevention, care and treatment in preparing for and responding to disasters, the World Disaster Report will again have to focus on the pandemic in 10 to 15 years.

Ms. Knight also stressed the key messages of the report.

"More research is needed especially around natural disasters. HIV must be a priority in disaster preparedness and response and there are good examples of organizations mainstreaming HIV in their work and of treating and caring for people living with HIV in conflict zones and other disaster areas."

The report says governments need to address the effects of disasters and provide prevention and treatment programmes for migrants, refugees and others in their national AIDS plans.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
