UN Deputy-Secretary-General laments Zimbabwe run-off election
The climate in which the 27 June run-off election in Zimbabwe occurred was not conducive to credible, free and fair elections because of the violence and intimidation that prevailed, said UN Deputy-Secretary-General Asha Rose Migiro.
Ms. Migiro was speaking to African leaders attending the of the African Union summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Regrettably, she said, the run-off went ahead despite calls made by the international community to suspend the vote:"This is a moment of truth for regional leaders. Many have raised their voices regarding this issue. The SG also urges you to mobilize support for a negotiated solution. Only dialogue between Zimbabwean parties, supported by the AU and other regional actors, can restore peace and stability to the country."
The session is focusing on the Millennium Development Goals, especially the targets on water and sanitation, which are to be achieved by 2015.
