The United Nations wants to strengthen its partnership with China.

That's what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told China's President Hu Jintao during a meeting Wednesday in Beijing.

"The United Nations need strong participation, cooperation and partnership of China and I count on continuing leadership and cooperation."

The Secretary-General praised China for its response to the 12 May earthquake that left more than 80,000 people dead and up to five million homeless in the Sichuan province.

For his part President Hu said China will maintain a responsible and constructive attitude and strengthen its cooperation with the UN and support and cooperate with the secretary-general's work.
