UN launches revised appeal for $480 million for Myanmar
It's been two months since Myanmar was struck by Cyclone Nargis but the challenges are still great.
UN Humanitarian Chief and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes launched a revised appeal Thursday for more than $480 million needed by UN agencies and non-governmental organizations to tackle more than 100 projects.Holmes says these projects include food, agriculture needs, water and sanitation, health, shelter, education and logistics.
"Although national, private sector and international responders have worked tirelessly to bring aid to the most vulnerable in the wake of the disaster, there are many who still remain in need of basic assistance and urgent support to get their lives and their livelihoods back to normal. The challenges are still great. The relief operation is by no means over."
Holmes says on the contrary, the international community needs to continue working quickly and cooperate more effectively to address the outstanding needs.
