Militias kill United Nations and African Union peacekeepers in Darfur

UN and Africa - a weekly 15-minute radio programme on political, social, economic and other developments related to Africa.

-United Nations and African Union peacekeepers are killed by unidentified gunmen in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan. The UN Secretary-General and the Security Council condemn the attack and call on the Sudanese government to do its utmost to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

-Two people involved in the provision of relief assistance to the suffering people of Somalia are killed in separate incidents. A truck driver contracted by the World Food Programme is shot in southern Somalia, and acting head of the UN Development Programme is killed as he leaves a Mogadishu mosque with his son and brother.

-As the crisis continues in Zimbabwe, following last month's one-man presidential run-off elections, the United States has proposed a draft resolution to impose sanctions on certain members of the Zimbabwean government. There are differences among Security Council members on this measure.
