In the Red Sea nation of Yemen, the average age of marriage is 12 to 13. A recent case in which an 8 year girl took the unusual step of defying convention highlighted the issue.

The steep rise in food prices this year has made it hard for many women in developing countries to meet the daily needs of their families, because most developing countries import food. But Malawi is one country that has shown that it is possible to achieve food security - one household at a time. Bissera Kostova reports.

A stability pact for the Great Lakes region of Africa looks to put an end to sexual violence against women

The 11 countries that make up Africa's Great Lakes region are determined to prosper as a group. So they have signed a Pact on Security, Stability and Development which entered into force last month. It includes some 30 projects in areas such as good governance, economic development and regional integration. But the Pact's Executive Secretary, Liberata Mulamula of Tanzania wants to be sure that its new legal framework offers protection from sexual violence to the region's women. Diane Bailey spoke to Ms. Mulamula when she came to the UN recently.
