Ban hopes for 80% deployment of UNAMID by year end

The top UN official says his goal is to deploy 80% of peacekeeping operations in Darfur by the end of this year in Darfur.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters in Germany that the international community, particularly led by the United Nations, has been trying its best to expedite the peace process and deployment of hybrid operations as soon as possible.

But he says unfortunately there has not been much progress owing to many difficult circumstances.

He cited the inflexibility of the Sudanese Government, problems in getting the necessary and critical assets like aviation, helicopters and ground transportation.

Secretary-General Ban also expressed the hope that the relationship between the South and North of Sudan will progress so that by 2011 there will be an election in accordance with the peace process agreement.
