The International Year of Sanitation - what progress is being made?
17/07/2008
The diarrhoeal and other illnesses people experience due to lack of sanitation are costly to families and the economy as a whole.
The World Health Organization estimates that meeting the sanitation goal of cutting in half the number of people without sanitation by 2015, would save $66 billion in time, productivity, averted illness and money spent on medical attention. Why do we need an International Year of Sanitation? Because, says Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, everyone has the right to a healthy life and a life with dignity. His Royal Highness is also Chair of the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.
