UN to provide funds to replace burnt and looted aid supplies in Chad
The United Nations is providing funds to replace aid supplies that were burned and looted during fighting in eastern Chad in June of this year.
Spokesperson Michele Montas says the Central Emergency Response Fund, known as CERF, will provide just over a million dollars for the emergency replacement."The grant will partly fund a project by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and will allow for the supply of emergency household items like blankets, mats, mosquito nets, kitchen sets, plastic sheeting, tents, and soap to refugees and internally displaced persons."
The Fund, launched in 2006, provides emergency disaster relief in countries struggling with natural disasters, armed conflicts or both.
In other news on Chad, round table talks to discuss the ongoing presence in Chad of the UN Mission and the European Force, are taking place today and tomorrow in Stockholm, Sweden. The talks will also look at the peace and security dividends to be reaped once there is a resolution of the Chadian conflict.
