A global pilot programme focuses on violence against women

Violence against women takes many forms. These include traditional practices affecting the health of women and girls, domestic violence, crimes committed in the name of honour and trafficking. Following an in-depth report on violence against women prepared by the Secretary-General and mandated by the UN General Assembly in 2006, a task force was set up to help countries in their efforts to eliminate violence against women. The task force is in 10 countries -- Burkina Faso, Chile, Fiji, Jamaica, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Paraguay, Philippines, Rwanda, and Yemen. Recently, UN Radio's Laura Repchek asked Upala Devi about the details of the task force.

Produced by Gerry Adams.
