France says it will table a resolution in the Security Council seeking to end the escalating conflict in Georgia.

Deputy Permanent Representative Jean Pierre Lacroix says it's a simple resolution that basically contains the same elements of a plan outlined by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

"Immediate cessation of hostilities, return of Russian and Georgian forces to the position they occupied prior to the outbreak of violence, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and independence of Georgia and the possibility of international help to contribute to the implementation of a solution."

The resolution was circulated to members of the Security Council last evening.
