WFP airlifts more food assistance to victims of conflict in Georgia

The UN food agency-WFP has airlifted high energy biscuits to Georgia for victims of the conflict.

The World Food Programme says two cargo aircraft left from the UN Humanitarian Response Depot in Brindisi, Italy with 34 metric tons of high energy biscuits to augment food stocks in Georgia which the agency started distributing over the weekend to thousands of people.

WFP says many of the displaced have no access to cooking facilities and high energy biscuits require no preparation.

The UN food agency has been providing 10-day food rations to more than 4,500 displaced people living in shelters in the capital.

The head of WFP operations in Georgia Lola Castro says "the number of people in need of food assistance continues to escalate," adding that more than 10,000 people are now registered as displaced.
