UNAMID condemns attacks against its helicopters

The joint United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur known as UNAMID has strongly condemned recent attacks against its helicopters in the troubled region of Sudan~

UNAMID says on 11 August, two helicopters were fired at while operating in West Darfur.

The first aircraft was hit about 90 kilometres northeast of El Geneina and its radio system and fuselage sustained some damage but no casualties were reported.

The second helicopter was fired at approximately three kilometres south of Jebel Moon while on mission to verify alleged bombing of locations in the area.

According to UNAMID the aircraft, which took evasive action, was not hit and returned safely to its base.

Citing confirmed reports, UNAMID says the Justice and Equality Movement claimed responsibility for the shooting of the first helicopter and its leadership apologized for the incident.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack on the second helicopter.

UNAMID says these grave incidents, which could have resulted in tragedy, are unacceptable obstacles to its mandate and mission in Darfur.
