Russia submits proposal for ending conflict in Georgia

Russia has submitted to the Security Council its own proposal for a resolution to end the conflict in Georgia.

This text incorporates in full an agreement between the parties in the conflict in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, sponsored by the French President, who currently heads the European Union. Russia's Ambassador Vitaly Churkin yesterday objected to a French draft resolution circulated earlier, for deviating from the text of that agreement in calling for Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia immediately as a prerequisite for further negotiations.

"So today we have tried to return the Security Council back on track and we introduced in the Security Council a draft resolution. The first paragraph of this resolution is a word to word rendition of the six principles agreed to by President Medvedev and President Sarkozy and later also supported by the Georgian side, Abkhazian side and the South Ossetian side."

Ambassador Churkin also announced a decision by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to increase its monitors in Georgia from less than 10 to 100.
