UN Envoy visits Myanmar
The UN Envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, on a week-long visit to the country, has met with government ministers, as well as with political parties and civil society groups.
His discussions have focused on ways to address the country's socio-economic problems and on the need for an inclusive national dialogue and a credible political process. He also spoke to the authorities about the release of political prisoners. On Tuesday Mr. Gambari visited areas in the Delta region affected by Cyclone Nargis.Marie Okabe, the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who visited Myanmar himself in the wake of the disaster, said it is too early to confirm his return visit there.
"He expects his good offices to be "deepened and broadened" through the continued engagement of his Special Adviser. He also indicated his intent to return to Myanmar when conditions are right to continue his dialogue with the Myanmar leadership."
Ms. Okabe was responding to press reports that indicated the Secretary-General would visit Myanmar by the end of the year.
