At the international conference on AIDS in Mexico City in early August, participants discussed the connection between violence against women and women's vulnerability to contracting the AIDS virus. The connection is evident not only in sexual violence, but extends to all kinds of violence, which can make women unable to negotiate safe sex, or keep them from accessing health services. Sex workers are particularly at risk, and policies that force sex work underground can make things worse. Changing men's attitudes towards gender violence is one organization's goal.

Women in India Stop Gun Violence

Gun violence accounts for nearly a quarter of a million deaths each year. Most of the perpetrators are young men, most of the victims: children and women. But stopping gun violence and the illicit trade that fuels it can be a gargantuan task. India, for example, is among the top recipients of guns. But one woman in India has been trying to stop the trade in illicit weapons, and at the same time, help to women left widowed by gun violence.
