UN group concerned over growing disappearances worldwide

A UN expert group is voicing its concern over the growing number of cases of enforced disappearances around the world.

In a statement on the eve of the International Day of Disappearances, the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances says victims include human rights defenders, religious leaders and people who belong to different ethnic and indigenous groups.

And it lists Chad, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Thailand, as countries of particular concern.

The Working Group says that enforced disappearance is "a terrible practice" that affects men, women and children and calls on governments to take steps to address the issue.
