UN agencies step up to assist Haiti in coping with the effects of two natural disasters

Haiti faces a "catastrophe" after being hit by a series of storms in recent weeks, President Rene Preval has said. Three storms in less than 21 days have killed 170 people and forced thousands to flee their homes in the Caribbean nation. Mr. Preval warned that the latest, Tropical Storm Hanna, could prove even more deadly than the one that killed more than 3, 000 people in 2004.
The World Food Programme says it's distributing thousands of blankets, hygiene kits and other basic supplies to Haitians;
The International Federation of the Red Cross appeals for ore than US$1.5 million to support relief efforts in Jamaica, Cuba, the Cayman Islands and Haiti;
A new report says the world's wealthiest countries are reneging on promises to boost development aid.
