UN envoy says it's time for Myanmar to release political prisoners

UN Special envoy Ibrahim Gambari says it's time for Myanmar leaders to release political prisoners and resume dialogue with opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Speaking to reporters after briefing the UN Security Council, Gambari said despite the government's receptivity to some of the proposals he made to them on this visit, the tangible results of the visit fell below expectations particularly with regards to the release of political prisoners and the resumption of dialogue between the government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi:

"Therefore, it's our view that it's imperative for the government of Myanmar at this point to deliver substantive results in response to our key concerns and suggestions."

Gambari said he also told the government during this visit that this was the time to deliver and build on the cooperation which has been taking place between the UN and Myanmar in response to Cyclone Nargis in May.
