17/09/2008
The UN food agency - WFP has tripled the amount of food being sent to tens of thousands of people in storm-ravaged Haiti.
WFP Country Director Myrta Kaulard says despite challenging conditions that allow for the transportation of supplies only by sea and air, the agency has increased the amount of food it's getting to the people who are in desperate need, with logistical support from the United States, Canada, Spain and the European Commission.WFP says working alongside UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration, as well as the UN Mission in Haiti, it has been able to ramp up aid deliveries this week with 1,000 tons of rice, beans, cooking oil, fresh water and other supplies delivered across the country.
Haiti was struck by four tropical storms - Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike over the past month leaving vast areas of the country under water.
