The President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili challenged the UN General Assembly to stand up for the principles of sovereignty and non-aggression underlying the United Nations Charter and to adopt a 'non-recognition policy' towards Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

"We are called upon not just to respond to the particular question of one instance of armed aggression in a single place, but to define our attitude towards armed aggression in all places."

President Saakashvili also called for an independent investigation of the origins and causes of the war.
