Georgia calls for non-recognition of breakaway regions
23/09/2008
The President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili challenged the UN General Assembly to stand up for the principles of sovereignty and non-aggression underlying the United Nations Charter and to adopt a 'non-recognition policy' towards Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Their independence was recognized by Russia after an armed conflict with Georgia last month."We are called upon not just to respond to the particular question of one instance of armed aggression in a single place, but to define our attitude towards armed aggression in all places."
President Saakashvili also called for an independent investigation of the origins and causes of the war.
