Iraq making progress on security

The President of Iraq, Jalal Talabani told the gathering of world leaders at the UN that his government is relentless in its determination to impose the rule of law throughout the country, to disarm militias and fight sectarian conflict.

"The Iraqi forces assumed responsibility usually taken by the multi-national forces in many governorates, the last of which was what happened in Anbar. We are currently working on assuming all the responsibility in defense of the democratic achievements of our people."

President Talabani said the Iraqi government realizes that the road to achieving a secure, stable and prosperous Iraq is long, but hopes the international community will continue assisting the country towards these goals. For its part, Iraq is keen to actively rejoin the international community and has recently signed a number of UN conventions, including ones on the prohibition of chemical weapons, on banning nuclear tests, and against terrorism.
