Millennium Development Goals Meeting Brings $16 Billion in Concrete Pledges

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the one-day high-level event bringing together world leaders, private-sector representatives and civil-society partners to discuss specific ways to energize collaboration around the UN Millennium Development Goals has probably generated an estimated 16 billion dollars in pledges to help the world's poor.

"If so, that expression of global commitment would be all the more remarkable, because it comes against the backdrop of a financial crisis. This brand of global leadership, this global partnership is the wave of the future."

Among the commitments are a one-billion-dollar plan to save the lives of 10 million mothers and babies, a one-billion-dollar programme against deforestation, a collaboration to help poor farmers in Africa, and a 3-billion-dollar partnership to contain malaria.
