UN chief concerned about increase in drug trafficking and organized crime in Guinea-Bissau
The increase in drug trafficking in Guinea-Bissau and along its borders could wreak havoc throughout the country, affecting peace and security, health, the economy and the rule of law.
That's what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a new report to the UN Security Council. The Secretary-General says he is especially concerned about reports that Guinea-Bissau is no longer merely a transit hub, but appears to be fast becoming a major marketplace in the drug trade.
He says drug trafficking and organized crime spreading to Guinea-Bissau cast an increasingly dark shadow over the country and threaten not only to erase important progress in the area of governance, but also undermine ongoing efforts for longer-term peace-building.
Secretary-General Ban also expressed concern about the volatile security and political situation in Guinea-Bissau, especially at a time when the country is preparing for crucial elections.
He calls on the UN Security Council to consider establishing a panel of experts to investigate the identity and activities of those involved in drug trafficking and organized crime in Guinea-Bissau.
