03/10/2008
The United Nations agency dealing with human settlements has chosen Luanda, the capital of Angola, as the lead city for the observance of this year's World Habitat Day next Monday.
The day is observed on the first Monday of each October to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the basic right to adequate shelter.UN-HABITAT spokesman Gert Ludeking notes that the theme for this year's World Habitat Day is harmonious cities:
"The celebrations in Angola will show the world how the country after years of conflict is progressing in the establishment of harmonious cities through improvements in urban infrastructure and services and new urban development strategies."
Gert Ludeking says harmonious cities are inclusive cities where everyone and every culture feels at home.
