In July, the Nobel Women's Initiative Delegation, made up of Wangari Maathai from Kenya, and Jody Williams and actress-activist Mia Farrow, both from the USA, conducted a fact-finding mission to investigate the link between human rights violations and the situation of women. They met with women on the border between Thailand and Myanmar, and in refugee camps in eastern Chad next to Darfur, Sudan. UN Radio's Gerry Adams caught up with Jody Williams when she presented the group's report at the United Nations. She praises these women saying rather than being victims of conflict, they are resilient and "just amazing."
Why Gender Sensitivity is Key to UN Peacekeeping
Tens of thousands of soldiers and police officers from across the world are serving at UN peacekeeping missions. They frequently work with post-conflict populations, including women and girls who have been victims of rape and other forms of violence used as a weapon of war.
As a result, the UN's International Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) believes gender training can an effective tool in peacekeeping.
