UN Security Council reaffirms sanctions against Iran

The UN Security Council has called on Iran to comply with its previous resolutions, urging it to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency on clarifying that there is no military component to its nuclear programme. In order to reach agreement, the Council, meeting on Saturday, stopped short of imposing new sanctions on Iran

Friends of Myanmar uphold commitment to democratic reforms

The "Group of Friends of Myanmar", as they are known, met on the sidelines of the high-level UN debate last weekend. David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom told reporters after the meeting that the group supports Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's efforts to encourage political reform in Myanmar. Singapore's Foreign Minister, George Yong-Boon Yeo sees the success of the humanitarian operation, which followed the devastating cyclone in Myanmar as an opening for the international community to exert its influence on the isolated Southeast Asian nation.

President Karzai of Afghanistan awarded UNESCO medal for education

Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, announced the agency is giving its first award for education to Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai. The award is named after the 13th century Persian-language poet and philosopher Mawlana Jalal-ud-Din Balkhi-Rumi.
