Israel tells the UN of its concerns over Iran's nuclear programme

Israel has expressed concern over Iran's nuclear programme.

The representative of Israel Amir Weissbrod told the General Assembly's committee that deals with Disarmament and International Security that over the past year, the Middle East has not become more peaceful nor safer.

He says Iran's nuclear programme has not been halted despite compelling evidence as to its military nature and calls by the UN Security Council for a suspension of its enrichment programme.

"This nuclear propgramme represents a clear threat to the stability and the security of the region as a whole and presents an urgent challenge for global peace and stability. Iran's hostile policies and statements, its aggressive pursuit of missile technology and its active involvement and support of terrorism further exacerbate the situation in the region."

Mr. Weissbrod says Iran's claim that its nuclear programme is legitimate can no longer be put forward in a credible manner.

Iran for its part says it wants to place on record that it is committed to its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
