Thousands begin returning home in Georgia:ICRC

Nearly two months after the conflict in Georgia displaced thousands, people have begun returning to villages north of Gori, but the problem is what do they go back to.

Jessica Barry of the International Committee of the Red Cross who was working in Georgia during the crisis returned to Geneva Tuesday.

She says people are very concerned about the upcoming winter.

"And they say to us how will we manage in the winter if our windows are broken or our roof is burnt. People to the west of the villages in Gori where I was on Saturday with a mobile medical clinic, people came up to us and said we wish we could bring our tents back with us or to have tents so that at least we can stay dry over the winter until our houses are rebuilt."

The ICRC continues to distribute food and household items to those most in need.

It is also informing the population to be aware of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Geneva Tuesday to meet with senior European diplomats ahead of talks over the conflict between Russia and Georgia last August.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
