Celebrating the first international day of rural women
Women: a weekly 14-minute news magazine that looks at issues affecting
women around the world.
Rural women, like these in Malawi, represent more than a quarter of the world's population. Despite their contribution to feeding the world, their needs are often overlooked in national budgets and they are among the poorest of the poor. That's why at the 1995 Women's Conference in Beijing a group of non-governmental organizations proposed devoting a day to them.
The World Health Organization refocuses its efforts on primary health care
According to the World Health Organization of the more than 130 million women who will give birth this year, nearly 60 million will receive no medical assistance whatsoever during and after childbirth endangering their lives and that of their infants. This is just one of the ways in which countries are coming up short in ensuring primary health care to all their citizens. This week government health ministers met in Almaty, Kazakhstan to reconfirm their commitment to a declaration they signed 30 years ago in the same city agreeing to focus their efforts on primary health care. But Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO, believes the concept has been misunderstood. Primary health care does not mean first-level care with referrals to specialists, or a separate kind of healthcare for the poor. It is about equity, says Dr. Chan.
