An estimated 100 million people at risk of falling into poverty: Ban

Current economic uncertainties make the task of eradicating poverty even more challenging.

That's what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday in a message marking International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The Secretary-General says rising food and fuel prices, and the global financial crisis are threatening to negate the progress made to reduce poverty and hunger in many parts of the world.

And he warns that an estimated 100 million people are now at risk of falling into poverty.

Secretary-General Ban says efforts to eradicate poverty must pay close attention to respect for human rights and dignity of all.

He says that means all poor people must have access to the resources they need - land, capital, knowledge and skills - to escape poverty.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
