UN agencies seek $30 million to help Cuba struck by storms and hurricanes

United Nations agencies have appealed for $30 million to help survivors of four tropical storms and hurricanes which recently struck Cuba.

Between August and September, Cuba was affected by four devastating storms -Tropical Storms Fay and Hanna and Hurricanes Gustave and Ike.

Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the storms and hurricanes which caused significant damage to Cuba's infrastructure.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that the Emergency Response Fund has contributed close to $9 million leaving a shortfall of over $20 million needed to help Cuba.

OCHA notes that due to the excellent preparedness of the Cuban Government, up to three million people were evacuated and very few lives were lost.
