Another UN peacekeeper killed in Darfur

A South African peacekeeper has been killed, and another injured in the latest attack on the UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region.

South African soldiers from the joint UN-African Union force were securing a water point near the Kassab Camp for internally displaced persons when the contingent came under attack from unidentified men who arrived in several heavily armed vehicles.

Both the injured female soldier and the body of the peacekeeper who died were evacuated to El Fasher. This latest attack brings to 11 the number of peacekeepers who have been killed since the beginning of the year when the joint mission, known as UNAMID, took over from the African Union force.

UNAMID troops have now been sent to reinforce the location that was attacked, search for assailants and conduct an investigation.
