Situation in Goma remains unstable and tenuous: UNICEF
In Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo the ceasefire is holding and the situation remains calm but tense.
But UNICEF spokesman in Goma Jaya Murthy says as has happened in the past, that calm can change in an instant. He says there are still concerns about the safety of aid being delivered as previous convoys have been subjected to constant raid and looting by armed groups.
However, he adds, humanitarian access is opening up.
"We have actually had access to a displacement area that has around 50,000 people as of Friday. We had a distribution of high energy biscuits which is an item ... energy and nutrient for children help ward off malnutrition. So we were distributing on Friday, Saturday and today to around 15,000 people displaced children in the area. Also we've provided medicine and medical equipment to that area to treat ill and injured children."
Murthy says UNICEF and its partners, are providing clean water to prevent an outbreak of cholera.
