MONUC continues to strengthen its actions in Goma: Doss

The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo -MONUC continues to review and strengthen its actions in Goma.

Special envoy Allan Doss told reporters Monday MONUC troops have opened up a humanitarian corridor and escorted NGO humanitarian workers as far as Rutshuru.

He says everyday UN troops are out there not just talking about peacekeeping but doing peacekeeping in very, very difficult and quite often dangerous circumstances.

"We've also continued to patrol extensively in the city jointly with the Congolese police force in order to avoid any further deterioration of security for the citizens of this city during the night and of course during the day."

Doss says a curfew proclaimed by the Governor will enable MONUC to ensure there is added security during the night.

He says the city itself is calm with people going about their business.

But he says clearly, they want to see progress on the political and diplomatic fronts.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
