Discriminatory laws in Iran deny women rights

In a report issued last month UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, reviewing the situation of human rights in Iran, expressed concern over the situation of women in the country. Iran has a number of discriminatory laws and there has been an increasing crackdown in the past year on the women's rights movement. But the report also notes significant improvements in women's health and education over the past decade. Bissera Kostova spoke to Mahnaz Afkhami, founding President of the Women's Learning Partnership, and former Minister of State for Women's Affairs of Iran, prior to the Islamic revolution of 1979. She asked her to comment on the report, starting with the good news.
