UNICEF says situation in North Kivu alarming

The humanitarian situation is becoming more and more alarming for thousands of vulnerable persons in North Kivu, mainly children and women.

According to the UN children's agency-UNICEF, last week, up to 100,000 persons, around 60 per cent of whom were children, had become internally displaced.

UNICEF says for hundreds of newly displaced families, the conditions are very difficult, with thousands having little access to food or potable water or care. UNICEF estimates that hundreds of children have become separated from their families.

School education is now increasingly affected for tens of thousands of children for the second consecutive year, and in such a situation, children become the most vulnerable and exposed.

UNICEF says according to reports, the Mayi Mayi rebel group had recruited 37 children last week as child soldiers.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
