UNICEF condemns stoning of Somali girl

The UN Children's Agency, UNICEF, has described as "deplorable" the stoning-to-death of a 13-year-old-girl, who had sough protection from the authorities, after being gang-raped by three men. Instead of the Islamist authorities in the town of Kismayo helping the rape victim, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, they accused her of adultery under Sharia law and stoned her to death. And in a stadium in the rebel-held town, she was reportedly buried in a hold up to her neck before being stoned to death, as she begged for mercy in front of a crowd of about one thousand people. On the line to Nairobi, Kenya, UN Radio's Ben Malor asked Hannan Suleiman, UNICEF's Deputy Country Representative for Somalia, how such a tragedy could have happened.
