UN Secretary-General attends African summit on DR Congo crisis

UN and Africa - a weekly 15-minute radio programme on political, social, economic and other developments related to Africa.

-UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attends a summit of African regional leaders in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rebel fighters declared a ceasefire last week but there is fresh fighting in North Kivu.

Perpetrator and victim of genocide in Rwanda reconcile

-In Rwanda, where the 1994 genocide killed an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus, people are rebuilding from the ashes of that massacre. UN Radio's Diane Bailey visited Rwanda and tells a story of reconciliation between a perpetrator and victim of the genocide.

South Africa looks to nuclear technology for electricity

-Nuclear technology is not only for the production of weapons of mass destruction but can also be used for peaceful purposes. Ambassador Leslie Gumbi of South Africa, who regularly attends UN meetings on nuclear disarmament, talks about the potential of nuclear technology for generating electricity in Africa.
