Conflict in North Kivu overshadows crisis in Oriental Province
07/11/2008
The ongoing conflict in North Kivu is overshadowing another major crisis in the Oriental Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to the World Food Programme spokesperson, Emilia Casella, Ugandan rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army have made incursions into the province which shares a border with Sudan. She says that approximately 200,000 people have been displaced by fighting in that province.
Emilia Cassella says that although the conflict in Oriental has received less public attention, humanitarian organizations are aware of the crisis and are working to help the displaced people.
"We are looking at an air bridge to bring aid to the Oriental Province as we prepare for land convoys to get food there, potentially through Sudan but also the route through Congo."
