WFP continues food distribution amidst fighting in the DRC
10/11/2008
The World Food Programme is extremely alarmed at the situation in Kibati, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where access has been blocked due to the level of fighting in the area.
Meanwhile, in six camps around Goma, WFP was expected on Monday to complete the distribution of 10-day food rations to over 135 thousand people. It's estimated that the total number of displaced people in need of food assistance is over one million. The organization is continuing its operations to move food to the east of the DRC and to complete food distributions to people displaced by the recent upsurge in fighting. WFP calls on all parties to the conflict to put in place a genuine ceasefire to allow humanitarian staff to safely reach those in need.Gerry Adams, United Nations.
