UN chief deeply distressed by plight of Palestinian civilian population in Gaza
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he's "deeply distressed" about the plight of the civilian population in Gaza.
He adds that, through its humanitarian work, the UN was standing by the people of Gaza and helping them in these difficult times. The Secretary-General also says that the closure of crossings, roadblocks, settlement issues and the demolition of houses are not desirable for the ongoing peace process.
He says he has discussed such matters with Israeli officials.
And he notes that the creation of an atmosphere conducive to the ongoing peace process is extremely important.
Stressing that the calm brokered by Egypt needs to be respected, Secretary-General Ban says he's concerned about recent violence and calls for it to stop immediately.
He adds that the Palestinian factions must work together towards national unity and reconciliation.
The Secretary-General made his comments Sunday at a pres conference following a meeting of the Quartet- made up of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States.
