Dr. Margaret Chan calls for higher investment in health

In this period of economic downturn, it is essential to increase investment in health and the social sector, says WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan.

She called on the international community to learn from the debt crisis of the 1980s, when countries responded to soaring oil prices by shifting budgets away from investments in health and education. Many countries, she said, are still suffering from the legacy of these errors. Dr. Chan has called on all governments and political leaders to maintain their efforts to strengthen and improve the performance of their health systems and to protect the health of their peoples.

Gerry Adams, United Nations.
