Due process of law must be respected: Kagame

Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the International Telecommunications Union High-level meeting on Climate Change, ICTs and Cyber-security, President Paul Kagame(photo of Rwanda was asked about the arrest of his chief of protocol, Rose Kabuye.

In his view, the arrest amounted to an abuse of the due process of law. He said in international justice, if there is no regulation, there is likely to be chaos.

"And what do I mean here? You cannot have France or any other country thinking it has the right to exercise its judicial powers beyond its borders to cover other sovereign entities."

President Kagame reasoned that if a village judge in France, for example, can indict a minister in another country, then the reverse should be true:

"We should have village judges in Rwanda or in any other country in Africa being able to indict the same people in Europe, in France or in other countries."

Demonstrations in the Rwandan capital of Kigali have also been protesting the arrest.
