Israel making progress in negotiations with Palestinians
Israel agrees with the assumption in an Arab peace initiative that says "a military solution to the conflict will not achieve peace or provide security for the parties."
Israeli President Shimon Peres (photo) told the General Assembly's high-level meeting on a Culture of Peace that the initiative's claim that "a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East is the strategic option of the Arab countries," is Israel's strategy as well.He says Israel is making progress with negotiations with the Palestinians; and exploring the possibility of real peace with the Syrians.
However, he adds, there are those in the region who sow hatred and try to widen the abyss and erect barriers:
"Let us free the world from the perception that an irrevocable curse of darkness hangs on the skies of the Middle East. Our shared history has known golden ages during which we - Arabs, Jews, Christians, lived as friends and brothers. Inter-faith dialogue will elevate our spirits, bring a breath of fresh air to our peoples today and live on in prosperity. Let us renew our faith in one God."
President Shimon Peres calls for a break in the bonds of hostility which stem from the past for the sake of the children.
