Rwanda uses ICT to improve lives

At the high-level segment of the International Telecommunication Union, taking place in Geneva from the 12th to the 13th of November, Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, talked about cyber-security, online child protection and greater use of information and communication technology, or ICT, as a way to mitigate climate change:

Kagame 1: More ICT applications continue to improve people's lives in sectors as health, education and wealth creation generally, as many firms -- informal, small, medium and large - expand and contribute significantly to our socio-economic transformation.

While young people surf the web and enthusiastically adopt new technology, President Kagame warned that some information can be harmful:

Kagame 2: For this reason, protection of children and young people must be one of the central pillars of any efforts to ensure a safer online environment.

President Kagame went on to say that Rwanda is establishing a cyber-security center and will increase internet access for young people through the One Laptop per Child programme.

Gerry Adams, United Nations.
