Violence in Afghanistan results in civilian casualties

Civilians have been the main victims of a series of attacks over the past 24 hours in Afghanistan.

In Wednesday's incident in Kandahar, acid was used to attack girl students on their way to school. Chris Alexander, the Deputy Special Representative of UNAMA, the UN Mission in Afghanistan, has condemned the attack as a hideous crime which has appalled people inside Afghanistan and around the world. A second attack, a large explosion in Kandahar, killed and injured a number of civilians and caused injuries to members of the Provincial Council. A third attack on Thursday took place in a crowded market area of Nangarhar and inflicted enormous suffering in an otherwise peaceful area. On behalf of UNAMA, Mr. Alexander called for an end to this cycle of senseless violence.

Gerry Adams, United Nations.
